In my opinion project management in IT requires hands-on experience in the field. This doesn’t mean you have to be a top Java developer or T-map certified tester, but you do need more than a basic understanding of what is happening in your projects. I am fortunate to have worked in very different environments both from an enterprise and from a technical perspective. This helped me in getting a thorough understanding of what makes projects succeed (and fail). I feel at home in both Waterfall/Prince2 (certified Foundation and practitioner) and Agile (certified scrum master) environments.
